INTB 4098: EXPLORING
SCANDINAVIA

Through the lens of social media….
A takeover, a caption, and a presentation!

Did you know that Scandinavian countries consistently rank among the top in the world for sustainability, quality of life, and social welfare?

This month, I had the opportunity to travel to Norway, Denmark, and Sweden alongside 21 fellow students. Through this University of Cincinnati study abroad program, we gained insights into these countries’ economies, lifestyles, and sustainability practices.

In Norway, we visited the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), where we had lectures on their criminal justice system, economic framework, and corporate sustainability practices. This provided us with a deep understanding of how Norway maintains high standards of living and environmental care. We also explored the history of Norway’s largest industry—fish farming—and marveled at the breathtaking fjords.

Next, we headed to Billund, Denmark, hosted by the LEGO Group. We participated in sessions about LEGO’s sustainability initiatives, such as bio-polyethylene made from Brazilian sugarcane. In Copenhagen, we experienced vibrant culture and witnessed the 2024 Marathon, showcasing community spirit and healthy living. Denmark’s innovation and community emphasis stood out.

In Sweden, we toured Hubhult, the IKEA headquarters in Malmö, renowned as one of the world’s greenest office spaces. Learning about their sustainable buildings and innovative ownership structure was inspiring. We also discovered how the IKEA Foundation secures the IKEA Concept’s longevity.

This experience expanded my understanding of sustainability, corporate culture, and economic systems. Special thanks to Professor Debashis Pal for organizing this invaluable trip!

I encourage everyone to explore these forward-looking countries—they exemplify that sustainability, quality of life, and economic prosperity go hand-in-hand.
